Question 1

What is a commercial cold room and how does it work?

Accepted Answer

A commercial cold room is a walk-in, temperature-controlled space used to preserve goods safely. Using advanced refrigeration systems, these rooms maintain consistent temperatures from chilled (+2°C to +8°C) through to frozen storage conditions (down to -25°C). Built with insulated panels to prevent heat gain and loss, they are essential for businesses handling high stock volumes that require frequent access and strict hygiene standards.

Question 2

What types of cold rooms do you offer?

Accepted Answer

Engetech Ltd offers chiller cold rooms (+2°C to +8°C), freezer cold rooms (-18°C to -25°C), multi-temperature cold rooms with separate zones, and industrial high-capacity cold storage. We supply both modular and fully bespoke systems, and can also upgrade or extend existing cold rooms.

Question 3

What is the difference between a modular and a bespoke cold room?

Accepted Answer

Modular cold rooms use pre-engineered standard panels assembled on site. They are quicker to install and lower in initial cost, making them ideal for restaurants, pubs, and businesses with straightforward storage needs. Bespoke cold rooms are fully custom-designed around your building layout, workflow, and regulatory requirements — best suited to food manufacturers, pharmaceutical storage, distribution warehouses, and any environment where compliance, capacity, and long-term scalability are priorities.

Question 4

How much does a commercial cold room cost in the UK?

Accepted Answer

Small modular chiller rooms (approximately 6–8 cubic metres) start from around £4,000–£6,000 installed. Larger facilities (over 20 cubic metres) typically range from £12,000–£20,000, with industrial or bespoke installations often exceeding £25,000. Freezer rooms require thicker insulation and more powerful refrigeration, so costs generally range from £6,000–£25,000 depending on size and complexity. Additional features such as racking, remote monitoring, and energy-efficient systems also affect the total.

Question 5

How long does cold room installation take?

Accepted Answer

Modular systems can typically be installed within a few days to two weeks. Bespoke systems may take several weeks depending on size and complexity. All installations include a commissioning and testing phase before handover to confirm performance and compliance.

Question 6

Do you need planning permission for a commercial cold room in the UK?

Accepted Answer

Most internal cold room installations within existing premises do not require planning permission. External installations or those requiring significant structural changes may need local authority approval. We always recommend checking with your local planning authority early in the project.

Question 7

Are your cold rooms compliant with UK food safety regulations?

Accepted Answer

Yes. All Engetech Ltd cold rooms are designed and installed to meet HACCP guidelines and UK food safety regulations, including the Food Safety Act and Food Hygiene Regulations. Our installations include calibrated temperature monitoring, hygienic surfaces, and full commissioning documentation to support audits and inspections.

Question 8

What maintenance and aftercare do you provide?

Accepted Answer

We offer comprehensive planned preventative maintenance contracts, routine servicing, and emergency support across the UK. Regular maintenance reduces breakdown risk, lowers energy costs, and extends the lifespan of your cold room. Proper servicing can reduce energy consumption by up to 20%.

Question 9

What industries do you serve?

Accepted Answer

Engetech Ltd serves food manufacturing, catering and hospitality, retail and supermarkets, pharmaceutical and healthcare, warehousing and distribution, pet food suppliers, and agricultural and farming businesses across the UK.

Accepted Answer
